Does Nail Polish Expire? How to Tell, How to Revive It, and What About Remover

Nail polish does not grow mold or go off like food. But it is a mix of solvents, resins and pigments, and once the bottle is opened, the solvents slowly evaporate. Over time polish thickens, separates and stops going on smoothly.

How long nail polish lasts

Most opened polish works best for about 18–24 months. Unopened, stored well, it can last longer. Check the back of the bottle for the open-jar symbol with a number and “M”, which is the brand's guide to how many months it is good for after opening.

Signs your nail polish has gone bad

  • It stays separated — a clear layer on top — even after rolling the bottle for a minute.
  • It has turned thick, stringy or gloopy.
  • The color or shimmer has changed.
  • It goes on lumpy and streaky, and takes forever to dry.

How to revive thick nail polish

Add two or three drops of nail polish thinner, close the bottle and roll it between your palms for a minute. Repeat if needed. Do not use nail polish remover. It contains acetone or other solvents that break down the polish formula and make it chalky and weak.

How to make polish last longer

  • Close the cap tightly, and wipe the neck of the bottle so it seals properly.
  • Store bottles upright, somewhere cool and dark — not a hot, steamy bathroom.
  • Roll instead of shaking.

What about nail polish remover?

  • Does it expire? Acetone itself is stable, but it evaporates quickly if the cap is loose. Added scents, oils and conditioners can break down, so very old remover may smell or work differently.
  • Acetone vs non-acetone: acetone removes polish faster and is the only practical option for gel and dip. Non-acetone remover is gentler on nails but slower, and it will not remove gel well.
  • Clothes and furniture: acetone can dissolve some synthetic fabrics such as acetate and triacetate, strip dyes, and damage varnished wood and some plastics. Work over a towel.

Questions people ask

Does nail polish expire?

It does not spoil like food, but it degrades. Opened polish is usually at its best for about 18 to 24 months; after that it thickens, separates and applies unevenly.

How can you tell if nail polish is bad?

It stays separated after rolling the bottle, has turned thick, stringy or gloopy, has changed color, or leaves a lumpy, streaky finish.

Can you fix thick nail polish?

Usually, with a few drops of nail polish thinner, then roll the bottle. Do not use nail polish remover; it breaks down the formula.

Does nail polish remover expire?

Acetone itself does not really go bad, but it evaporates if the cap is loose, and added scents and conditioners can break down over time. Keep it tightly closed.

Does regular nail polish remover remove gel?

Not well. Gel needs pure or high-percentage acetone and a soak. Non-acetone removers will not break gel down.
