"Nail booking app" covers two quite different kinds of app, and choosing the wrong one is why so many appointments still end with a set that is not what you pictured. One kind helps you find a free time slot at a salon. The other starts with the design and finds you an artist who can actually make it. Here is how they differ, who each one suits, and how to use them together.
Type 1: Salon slot-booking apps
Salon booking platforms such as Booksy, Fresha and Vagaro let you search salons near you, choose a service from their menu and book an open time slot. Many salons use them to manage their calendar, and some take deposits through them. They are excellent when you already know what you want and just need an appointment.
What they do not do is carry your design. You book "gel manicure with art", then explain the art when you arrive — which is where the screenshot problem starts.
Type 2: Design-first apps
A design-first app reverses the order. You design the exact set first — shape, length, colour, finish and art on every finger — and the design becomes the request. In Nailly, you post the finished design to your city's "Who can make this?" board. Local artists who can make it claim it, you chat in the app, get a quote for exactly that set, and agree the appointment.
The price and payment for the appointment stay between you and your artist; Nailly does not take a commission. The difference from a slot-booking app is that the artist knows exactly what you want before they say yes.
Which one do you need?
- A regular manicure at your usual salon: a slot-booking app, or just your salon's own booking link.
- A specific design you want made exactly: a design-first app, so the artist sees the full design before quoting.
- A new artist who can do a particular look: design-first, so you hear from artists who can make it rather than discovering they cannot on the day.
- A big event like a wedding: both — design it first, then lock in the date early. See our wedding nails guide.
For nail artists: what a booking app should do for you
If you are a nail artist, the right app saves you from requests that live in DMs and screenshots. Nailly gives each request a home with the full design attached, and lets you move every booking through clear statuses — claimed, quoted, booked, done. Booked appointments can be added to your own device calendar. Around that, waitlists help you fill cancellations, refill reminders bring clients back around the three-week mark, and private client notes remember allergies and preferences.
Plenty of artists use a salon calendar app for scheduling and a design-first app for the requests themselves. For more on growing a client list, see getting more clients without posting every day and why clients rebook the same artist.
Before you book anything
Whichever app you use, three things make the appointment go well: know your shape and length, have a clear picture of the design, and ask about timing and price before the day. Our consultation questions and what to bring to a first appointment cover the rest. Nailly is live on the App Store in the United States and Canada, and every account starts with a free week.
