October Nails 2026: The Colours and Designs Artists Are Booking

October is the month the nail palette finally commits to autumn. The pastels and brights are gone, the colours go deep and glossy, and texture starts to matter as much as shade. If you are booking a set this month, here is what artists are actually making — the colours, the finishes, and the designs — plus how to choose between them for your nail length and your calendar.

The October colour palette

The month runs dark and rich rather than pumpkin-bright. The shades leading October sets:

  • Oxblood and burgundy — this year leaning slightly plum rather than straight wine. Our burgundy and oxblood guide covers how to pick the right one for your skin tone.
  • Chocolate and espresso brown — the season's neutral. See espresso and latte nails.
  • Deep plum and violet — the "witchy" purple everyone is screenshotting. More in purple nails, done right.
  • Forest and olive green — best as cat-eye or as an accent nail.
  • Burnt orange and amber — the warm accent colours, usually paired with brown.

Five October designs worth booking

1. Dark cat-eye. Magnetic cat-eye in burgundy, forest green or plum. This season's version uses a softer, more diffused shimmer line rather than a sharp stripe, so it reads as a glow from inside the nail.

2. Muted tortoiseshell. Espresso and amber blended into a low-contrast shell print, often on two accent nails against a cream or brown base. The seven ways to wear tortoiseshell and leopard walk through every placement.

3. Brown French. A sheer nude base with a chocolate or wine tip in place of white. Elegant on short nails, and it grows out without an obvious line — compare depths in micro vs deep French.

4. Oxblood jelly. A translucent deep red jelly finish that looks like stained glass. Forgiving when it chips and easy to refill into a holiday colour later.

5. One Halloween accent. A plain dark set with one small spooky detail per hand, for the last week of the month. Nine ideas in Halloween nails 2026.

Finishes: gloss, velvet and a little texture

High gloss is still the default, but October is when velvet (a soft, diffused cat-eye) and matte get their moment. A matte brown set with one glossy accent is a quiet, very autumn combination. If you are unsure which finish suits you, the plain-English guide to nail finishes explains each one.

Choosing for your length

Dark colours exaggerate shape, so short nails often look best in a soft round or squoval with a deep jelly or cat-eye, where the colour has depth instead of a flat block. Longer almond and coffin shapes can carry full prints and two-tone designs. Our short nail designs are a good starting point if you keep your nails close to the fingertip.

Plan October into November

A set booked in early October usually needs a fill by the end of the month. If you choose a colour that also works for Thanksgiving — chocolate, cranberry jelly, burgundy — your fill can keep the same base and just change the accent.
