Regular nail polish is simple, which is why it is so annoying when it goes wrong. The good news is that almost every problem — peeling, bubbles, tackiness, streaks — has the same few causes, and each one has a quick fix.
Why nail polish peels off
Polish that lifts off in sheets, often within a day or two, did not bond properly to the nail.
- Oil or moisture on the nail. Hand cream, cuticle oil, or washing your hands right before painting leaves a film. Wipe each nail with rubbing alcohol or polish remover first.
- No base coat. Base coat is the sticky layer that grips both the nail and the color. Skipping it is the most common reason polish peels.
- The tip was not sealed. Run the brush lightly along the free edge of each nail with every coat (called capping). Peeling usually starts at the tip.
- Water too soon. Long showers, washing dishes or swimming within a few hours of painting soften polish before it fully hardens.
- Bendy nails. Thin nails flex more than polish can, so it cracks and lifts. See our guide to brittle and peeling nails.
Try not to peel polish off when it starts lifting. It pulls away the top layers of your nail with it. Use remover instead.
Why nail polish bubbles
- Shaking the bottle. It whips air into the polish. Roll the bottle between your palms instead.
- Thick coats. The surface dries before solvents underneath escape, trapping bubbles.
- Heat and humidity. Painting in a steamy bathroom, or blowing hot air on wet polish, makes bubbles more likely.
- Coats too close together. Wait a couple of minutes between coats.
- Old polish. As solvent evaporates, polish thickens and bubbles more.
Why nail polish stays sticky
With regular polish, tackiness that lasts more than about half an hour usually means the coats are too thick to dry through. Thin coats and a quick-dry top coat fix it.
With gel polish, a sticky layer after curing is normal. It is called the inhibition layer, and it forms where oxygen touches the gel. Wipe it off with alcohol at the end — unless your top coat is labelled no-wipe. If gel stays soft or gooey underneath, it is under-cured: the coat was too thick or the lamp does not match the polish.
Why nail polish looks streaky
- Sheer formulas. Pastels, whites and jelly polishes are naturally streaky in one coat and need two or three thin ones.
- Overworking. Use three strokes per coat — one down the middle, one down each side — and stop. Going back over half-dry polish drags it.
- Old or thick polish. A couple of drops of nail polish thinner (not remover) can restore it.
Why nail polish never seems to dry
Regular polish dries as the solvents evaporate, from the top down, so thick coats can stay soft underneath for hours. Thin coats, a few minutes apart, plus a quick-dry top coat make the biggest difference. For timings, see how long nail polish takes to dry.
When it is time for gel or a pro
If regular polish never lasts more than a couple of days on you even with good prep, gel or BIAB may suit your nails better. Our guide to gel, acrylic, BIAB and press-ons explains the differences.
If you are planning a set, you can design it first in Nailly — shape, length, finish and art on every finger — then post it to your city's board so a nail artist who can make it claims it and books you. Questions people ask
Why does my nail polish peel off in one piece?
Usually because there was oil or moisture on the nail when you painted, no base coat was used, or the free edge was not sealed. Wipe nails with alcohol or remover before painting, use a base coat, and run the brush along the tip of each nail.
Why does my nail polish bubble?
Air gets trapped when you shake the bottle, apply thick coats, paint in a hot or humid room, or add the next coat too soon. Roll the bottle between your palms instead of shaking and use thin coats.
Why is my nail polish still sticky?
Regular polish stays tacky when coats are too thick to dry through. Gel polish is supposed to feel sticky after curing; that inhibition layer is wiped off with alcohol unless you use a no-wipe top coat.
Why is my nail polish streaky?
Sheer formulas, coats that are too thin or too thick, overworking the polish, or an old, thickened bottle. Use three strokes per coat and add a second thin coat.
Why does my nail polish never dry?
Thick coats are the main reason; each layer needs to dry from the top down. Old, thickened polish and humid rooms slow it further. Thin coats a few minutes apart and a quick-dry top coat help.
